What is this book?
A practical guide to Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): the contract that transforms a solar power plant from an engineering project into a commercial venture. It explains what a PPA is, how each part of it works, and what each clause does with money.
The book is directed to engineers, developers, contractors and investors. If you build, price, finance or operate generation assets, this contract governs your work whether you tell anyone about it or not.
How does the book teach you?
Every topic follows the same path, which is the path by which the matter is explained to a colleague sitting in front of you:
- What is it, in simple terms?
- Why does it exist, and what problem does it solve?
- The practical rule, called a practical rule.
- The equation is written down.
- An example calculated with complete figures.
- The decision that all of this leads to.
albunud huna laysat masrudatan bal mashruhatun: likuli band tajid madha yufaeili, wakayf tabdu sighatuh aljayidatu, wakayf tabdu sighatuh alsayiyata, wamithal mahsub lima tkllfh alsiyghat alsayiyatu. 142 The items here are not listed but explained: for each item you find what it does, how a good version of it looks, how a bad version of it looks, and a calculated example of what a bad version of it would cost.
The Two Examples
Instead of jumping between hypothetical projects, the book uses two examples throughout:
- Example A: A 20 MWac self-consuming power plant for a factory in Saudi Arabia with a large daytime load, purchasing power from a plant built on its land. Intended size: a size that a team reading this book could actually develop.
- Example B: A 100 MWac grid-tied, market-neutral power plant, used in chapters where size changes the structure itself, not just the numbers, such as project finance and special purpose vehicles.
